Ramadan tip: Fasting is a great opportunity to become content and put a firm foundation around your heart. The hunger of a fast is a constant reminder that you can, in fact, eat; yet you choose not to. It is an essential examination of human desire, and it delivers a frank appraisal of our ability to control those desires. This is powerful information: desire is at the root of anxiety. Whenever you feel the pangs of hunger, don’t just passively ignore it. Meet it head on. Tell yourself in a loud inner-voice, “No. I’m stronger than this because my essential connection with God is indestructible.”
With practice, all those other habits and fears which have been lurking in the dark corners of your mind will become subservient to your indomitable will, derived from your connection to the divine. Then, one day, you’ll wake up and realize that you are truly happy.
Indeed, Allah is with those who are patient.
